The Chronicles of Narnia 3 (The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) was a great experience getting the opportunity to work on Eustace the Dragon, a creature featured in 120 shots of the movie with a lot of screen time and many close ups
It was a challenging task which took a lot of patience and dedication. I was essentially asked to lead the texture work on the dragon and was the first artist to work on it concepting the layout of the scales and thinking how we would approach texturing, working with the Art Director Virginie Bourdin. This asset was done before the days of Mari and Substance so we had to use Photoshop UV based textures and there were a lot of UDIMs to handle. We used some procedural methods to help make the initial base layer of the scales then would work on top of it with detail and work in ZBrush. Another two artists were added to the task to help speed up the production, as we worked out smart ways to split up the asset and keep consistency of look.
I was also involved in the Dawn Treader ship but I will cover that in another project entry.
I am still proud of the work we did on this considering it is an old project, and unfortunately this was the last project I would work on with MPC before making the move to Texture Supervisor at Cinesite for their huge award on John Carter of Mars.
Here are many of the close up shots showing the dragon facial expressions and scale details.
Here are some of the shots of the Dragon in action.
